YOUTH COACHING
When I was walking on the Camino to Santiago da Compostello in 2004, I made my intention to find a way to work that brought together all my skills and experience, and to re-ignite my passion for working with young people. On the walk I went through many ups and downs as anybody who has undertaken such a journey will know. I found strength in myself that I did not know I had and the peace of only having a few belongings and a clear mission every day – just to walk!! I walked for 12 miles with blisters on my feet that I wouldn’t have been able to walk across the room on at home!!!
But the thing that had most impact on me was when I was walking with a group of Spanish people – I saw them looking at a group of young people and talking – I don’t speak Spanish, so asked a friend to translate – they are saying “ Ah….. there are our Golden Treasures, the future for us.” That has had a lasting impact on me.
What a difference to the way that young people are spoken to in Ireland and the UK today – mainly negatives – ASBO’s, Troubled Youth, The Youth of Today, scumbags, young drivers, young binge drinkers. Even though people may not say the same about their own children and the ones they know, the message is around that young people are somehow trouble, that adults can do things but if young people model them, they can be blamed. What a difference it would make to Young People to know that the adults saw them as Golden Treasures – to nurture their spirits and help them take responsibility for their lives and the world they’re be living in.
Throughout all this time I was working as a Homeopath and Holistic Counsellor. This planted the seeds for the next change which bought me to train as an NLP Practitioner, and then as a Life Coach.
As soon as I had thought of training as a coach, I was approached by Harry Singha from the Youth Coaching Academy. He wanted to bring Youth Coaching to Ireland and to Co. Clare – since then we have worked closely together and Your Pathway to Change is the gateway to Youth Coaching in Ireland.
